Programme
22nd April to 22nd July 2001![]()
Please try to bring a Bible with you each week. In order to make Bible study easier, we are recommending
that people who are thinking of buying a bible go for the Youth Bible. This is a modern translation (the New Century
version) and also contains modern explanations and examples to help understand what is being taught.
All meetings will be held at 165 Cold Overton Road, Oakham starting at 8.15pm unless we tell you otherwise.
Some people have just started eating chocolate again (or crisps, or whatever else they gave up for lent). Why did they do it? What do you get out of it? And should you just do it at Lent time, or is it useful at other times?
Special Let RYP, led by an African group. A chance to discover how God is worshipped in other parts of the world, and how their experiences compare with ours. Meet at the church for the service at 6pm - and back here afterwards for coffee.
Without Jonathan Woss, though…we look at three different film clips and pick out some lessons for us as Christians.
If the foot-and-mouth epidemic hadn't happened, we'd be voting in a general election about now, and there would have been so much discussion on TV that you'd probably be sick of the word. How does government and democracy fit into God's plan?
There's a nasty word. It is so easy to borrow money at the moment, people are practically putting it in your pockets - and the age at which you can get into debt is getting lower and lower. Why do people do it? Should Christians borrow money at all? What line should we walk down? And how can the bible advise us on this?
Let Rutland Youth Praise at St. Joseph's. Meet at St. Joseph's for the service at 6pm - back up here afterwards for a bit of a party. The pool will be open, and definitely warmer than it was in November - honest, Sophie and Sarah! Bring swimming things if you want to test it out, or not if you don't…
A high speed tour through the old testament, from Genesis to Malachi. How does the history of the Jews affect our belief in Jesus?
The most read books in the bible must be the four gospels. Just what were the main events in Jesus' life? Why are there four versions of them? And why do some mention events that others don't?
What happened next? How did the news of Jesus' death and resurrection get spread to more than just a dozen Jews? How did the church get created, and who was this Paul guy anyway?
There are lots of myths about how the bible was actually put together. Fortunately, our local expert Mr. Gordon-Kerr is able to provide the answers. That's the Rev. F.A.Gordon-Kerr, i.e. my dad, for anyone who is worried that I'm getting ideas above my station…this will be a really good session to get to.
We're on holiday, walking around Exmoor (assuming, as I write this in April, that we can be walking around Exmoor by then). Tell us what you want to do…
Still on Exmoor - or maybe not. What would you like to do?
Last Sunday night session this year - next week we'll be in Wells at the beach weekend. A chance to chill out after exams (or anything else anyone is doing) and relax a bit. Bring any music you want to play, we'll do some food, and the pool will be open for swimming.
NetReach@OBC is a Saturday night venue for teenagers - pool, air hockey and serious music plus more in the gameZone, drinks and eats in munchZone and full internet access in the cyberZone. Oakham Baptist Church, 7.0-8.30pm for 11-14s, 8.00 - 10.00pm for 14 and upwards. www.netreach.org.uk for more details.
Challengers' third beach weekend at Wells in Norfolk. Cost will be £25 including transport, camp site and food. A chance to get away after exams (for those doing exams - anyone who isn't, some people get all the luck - or you're just old, like us!). Sun, sea and sand, and a bit of teaching thrown in.
Challengers are going to Soul Survivor 'A' this year. All those who have already booked, we will need the balance by the end of June. Anyone who hasn't, I have spare forms - talk to someone who's been before if you want to know more about it, or look it up at www.soulsurvivor.com.
