Programme 25th November 2001 to 3rd February 2002 |
What is hedonism? The dictionary says it is the 'pursuit of pleasure'. It is also what every advert would have us do - go for pleasure now and don't worry about the consequences. How does that mix into how the bible tells us to live?
The Anglican Church celebrates the first Sunday in Advent today - the beginning of the church year. The lights are up in Oakham, and every shop is playing "Merry Christmas Everybody" for the fourteenth time. We take some time out to think about what all the noise is about.
What are things really worth? Why do we consider one thing worth more than another. And can you really put a value on anything? Find out in our auction.
You would have to be locked in a small cardboard box not to have heard of Harry Potter, the boy who goes to school to become a wizard. Should Christians watch this film? Does it encourage witchcraft? Since we can't discuss this without seeing it, we are going to watch during the afternoon (we'll confirm the time and place when we have more accurate cinema news), and then come back to the house for food and a discussion on the film.
…and there's only two shopping days until Christmas! So, assuming some of you will just be starting, we'll give you this one off.
Challengers late late Christmas party! (without either Noel Edmonds or Mr. Blobby, you'll be glad to know…) Bring your photos of Challengers during the year, and we might manage to get some of them up on the web site - and don't forget your £2 present for another Challenger for the draw. No more than £2, please.
The start of a new year - a chance to think about how last year has gone, and to look ahead to the year coming. What resolutions are you going to make this year? Only watching 'Friends' twice a week? No more than two football matches in any session? (or any season?) And do any of these resolutions involve God in anyway?
Rutland Youth Praise celebrates its third birthday at Lyddington.
The bible tells us quite a lot about war. If nothing else, a lot of the old testament seems to involve fighting battles with one group or another. But Jesus is also known as the Prince of Peace. So what should be the Christian attitude to war? Should Christians join the armed forces? And when is it right to fight?
Something new over the last three years - posters and advertisements all over the country encouraging people to think about God and Jesus. What is the Alpha course? What does it set out to do? Would anyone be interested in going on it? Or is it something you could take your friends to? Session taken by John and Margaret Donald, who help to run the Alpha Course in Oakham, at their house (32 Trent Road in Oakham)
Delirious at De Montford University in Leicester. We're not going, but some of the OBC folks are, and we can put you in touch with them if you want to go. Tickets somewhere around £10. www.delirious.co.uk for more information.
House party for the weekend at the GKs. You don't get the sun, sea and sand bit of the Wells weekend away, but your parents get the weekend off….Let us know anything specific that you want to do, but we are already including videos, and possibly a bowling trip - sorry, Jane, but we won't be going to see Stoke City this weekend…
Let RYP hits a new venue, Oakham School.
These are the two possibilities for Beach Weekend this year. Can people check when families are going on holiday etc, and tell us which they would prefer? Thanks.
