A love song, or more accurately an "I'd like to be in love but she won't look in my direction" song. Written while I was supposed to be minding a production line at Jacob's Biscuits in Liverpool, a suitably romantic setting!
Based on David Eddings' 'The Belgariad', the series that got me reading fantasy fiction. A song about Garion, the main character.
Eddings again - a scene out of his second series, "The Malloreon" inspired this parody of the Four Seasons' "Oh, what a night". The original song was actually titled "December '63 (Oh, what a night)" so I had to follow the title - as far as I could work out from the book, that is the accurate date!
A bit of silliness about recording sessions, to the tune of Europe's "The Final Countdown"
Inspired loosely by Nevil Shute's 'Round the Bend', from which the first line of the chorus came. A love song. At least at first...
I think any songwriter has a soft spot for their first ever song, and this is mine. I took what I thought was a mostly completed song into two friends of mine. Adam sat down at a keyboard and changed all my chords, and Becky grabbed a sheet of paper and rewrote my lyrics - both of which made the song what it is. But apart from that it's my song. Honest!
A somewhat depressing song written at a somewhat depressing time. Skip past this one unless you're feeling in that sort of mood!
This is a Christian song that had two inspirations. One was a shopping trip at Christmas and a realisation of what all that Christmas now means to a lot of people. The other was the musical "Yours Personally" by Kate Green and John Lawrence, which manages to put into words (and some gorgeous songs) what is sometimes so difficult to explain. "It isn't just a story. He can really know you if you let him. There's nothing he won't do for you. Trust me, Fran."
A parody of the Zombies' "She's not there". The character described is once again from David Eddings' "The Belgariad", a princess called Ce'Nedra. The incident is from book four in the series, 'Castle of Wizardry'.
Written in collaboration with friends, this is taken from "Nine Princes in Amber" from the Amber series by Roger Zelazny.
A song based on Katherine Kerr's Deverry universe. 'Silver Daggers' are mercenary soldiers, outlawed for various past offences, who make a living wandering as a sword for hire. They call their way of life "the long road". With my job as a consultant also involvinga fair degree of travelling, this song crosses the fact/fantasy border backwards and forwards on occasion.
Probably my favourite song. Written about three friends at university, on the day of their graduation. I was perched on a wall outside Nadia's sandwich shop in Cambridge, watching the graduation parade, and had to race into the stationery shop to buy a notepad and pen so that I could write it down! It's a song about saying goodbye.

Another love song - this one was written in my head during one of the May Balls at Cambridge, and hit paper after I'd recovered the following day. Should be sung in a soft reggae style; there was an extremely good reggae band playing this style while I was writing the song.
I'm a Christian, so occasionally I write Christian songs - although I find it very difficult to get the lyrics right. This particular song was written almost by mistake - I was supposed to be preparing a bible study on Zechariah 7 for the bible study group I led then, and I got distracted by Zechariah 8. The result was a good song (well, I think so!) and a slightly less-prepared bible study!
A parody of "Streets of London" by Ralph McTell, based on Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" universe - particularly the book "Guards, Guards!"
I thought it was about time we had a female hero rescuing her beloved, rather than the fantasy norm of the other way round. Not inspired by any particular book - I just made it up as I was going along.
One of my hobbies is sound engineering - i.e. working behind the mixing desk trying to balance the sound of the band on stage. This is a little parody about what makes it all go.
